欧亨利的微型小说《麦琪的礼物》中所讲述的,是一个圣诞节里发生在社会下层的小家庭中荒唐却感人的故事。男主人公吉姆是一位薪金仅够维持生活的小职员,女主人公德拉是一位贤惠善良的主妇。

他们的生活贫穷,但吉姆和德拉各自拥有一样极珍贵的宝物——吉姆祖传的一块金表就算“地下室堆满金银财宝、所罗门王又是守门人的话,每当吉姆飘过那儿,准会摸出金表,好让那所罗门王忌妒得吹胡子瞪眼睛”;德拉一头秀丽的瀑布般的秀发则能够“使那巴示女王的珍珠宝贝黔然失色”。

为了能在圣诞节送给对方一件礼物,吉姆卖掉了他的金表为德拉买了一套“纯玳瑁做的,边上镶着珠宝”的梳子;德拉卖掉了自己的长发为吉姆买了一条白金表链。头次明白这个文章的时候是在收音机里听到的。那时候年纪很小收听的时候没有什么感觉,只是有个困惑让我百思不得其解,为什么小说里面的主人公表带和梳子都买不起直到之后看到原著才明白那是镶满宝石的梳子和白金的表带。当时电台选用这个小说播放也是为了当时的政治需要,好让我们感受到社会主义的温暖资本阶级社会的丑恶,当然了这些都是长大以后才慢慢明白的。自从接触到这个原作之后,这个小说就一向伴随着我。时不时的拿出来温习下里面的情节,故事虽小但是处处闪烁着人性的光辉,温暖亲情、至爱、忠贞。在艰难困苦环境下一对相爱相依的夫妻,用自己最珍惜的东西去换取对方所心爱的礼物。

故事虽说是有些杯具性的色彩但是烘托出来的却是比万金更要贵重的人与人之间的关爱。在文章当中作者并没有进行什么说教评论式的叙述,而是对周围环境的细致刻画及其家庭状况的详细描述,使之人物呼之欲出,仿佛这样的事情就发生在我们身边的城市。古语云:患难时刻见真情。纵观我们当今的环境名利当头,人与人之间的冷漠,事不关己高高挂起,完全以利益为重。道德、亲情、感情被金钱冲散的支离破碎。为了利益与金钱夫妻分道扬镳,兄弟反目,朋友相互猜疑,仿佛只有功利才是第一位的。

而目前评判一个人的价值成功与否,都是以他拥有多少的财富与地位的高低挂钩。无论这个人的心地多么的善良已经无关轻重,以貌取人成为了我们衡量一个人的标准。中国自古以来的谦卑、道德准则至于脑后。人们有时看到公共场合的不端作为竟已然无动于衷,处处充满了麻木。反而对出现的一些拥有奉献精神的行为嗤之以鼻,到达了劣币逐良的程度。正如柏杨及其鲁迅先生所说这个社会就是一个大染缸,任何一种异质的文化到了这个大染缸里就失去了原先的本性。而然这篇文章却能时时唤起人们内心的本善,使之能够让人还能够体会到世间真情的祥和与温暖,主导的人性并不是尔虞我诈,见利忘意。正如诺贝尔奖获得者特雷莎修女所说:“我们常常无法做伟大的事,但我们能够用伟大的爱去做些小事。”
