人总是希望和周围的朋友攀比，如果他们有钱，我们肯定也希望有钱，相反，如果他们很穷，那么我们却不在乎同样受穷，这大概是人的天性吧。我们不会因为自己的愚蠢而羞愧，我们只会因为比周围的朋友更蠢才感羞愧。匹普正是因为与上层小姐交流过后，感到羞愧，他才会厌恶以前和他一起的那些朋友们。假如我们未期待拥有，就不会对失去而沮丧。既然我们不曾指望富有，我们也不会因为贫穷而失望。
懂得知足的人最快乐。对物质的追求是没有尽头的，此时需要我们有清醒的头脑去认清哪些是我们必须的，哪些是我们不必需要的。

就拿书中第三章第三节的人的境界与教育来说，联系的普遍性告诉我们两者是相辅相成的，人的境界和教育内部间也存在着深刻的联系。对受教者来说，境界越高，对教育的接受程度就越高；教育程度越高，自身的境界也会相应提升。同样这个结论对施教者而言也适用。施教者的人生境界提升对受教者的教育也会起到促进作用。这样环环相扣的关系怎么能不引起我们重视？
书中有许许多多的问题值得我们去思考。比如什么是“人的存在性”？人既然存在在这个世界上，就会有很多的属性，而这些属性的总和，就是人的存在性。其中一个重要体现就是人的意识性。每个人都有意识，谁都不愿意自己的意识被别人剥夺。让别人做他不想做的事，就是剥夺他人的意识。可热衷于掌控他人意识的人不在少数。
这在教育领域，就体现为教师的灌输，为教学设置过多的标准答案等等，都是以教师为主体，忽略了学生主体意识的一种体现。按石中英教授的话来说，就是一种“不人道的精神虐杀”，当然这种措辞有些严厉。
我们总是想当然得认为学生的思想幼稚，需要老师在各方面进行教育，但并不意味着教师就有权力剥夺他们意识。如果这样，学生就容易人云亦云，盲目从众，丧失自我，缺乏创新意识。因此，教师不能代替学生去思考问题，用自己的意识来代替他们的，忽略他们最基本的作为人的存在性。
教师应当要尊重学生的发言，即使错了也不急于反驳他们的观点，而是要把正确的观点陈述出来，让学生做对比，从而得出最终的答案，并且反思自己的思考过程存在那些漏洞。不能心急，为了课程的流畅，把答案直接说出来。现在的教育应当充分体现学生为主体，让学生在课堂上树立主人翁的意识，教师则要成为学生与知识之间的桥梁，成为教育的引导者。只有这样，学生才能真正走出一条属于自己的康庄大道。
