这本书主要讲了出身贫寒的孤儿简爱，从小就寄养在舅母里德夫人家中，受尽百般欺凌后来进了慈善学校，灵魂和肉体又都经受了苦痛的折磨，可她并没有自暴自弃，而是以顽强的意志力完成了学业，并且成绩还很优秀。为了追求独立的生活，她应聘做了家庭教师。由于志趣相投，她和男主人公真诚相爱，在经历磨难后，终于走到了一起。与其说这是夏洛蒂＊勃朗特的代表作，更不如说这是夏洛蒂＊勃朗特的一本自传。
夏洛蒂出生在英国北部的一个牧师家庭。老勃朗特共有六个子女，夏洛蒂排名老三，上有两个姐姐，下有两个妹妹和一个弟弟。由于老勃朗特早年丧妻，他便把自己卓越的才智和全部的爱都倾注在了孩子们身上。

主人公简爱的独特个性和思想，爱是一个不美的，矮小的女人，但她有顽强的自尊心。在打动身为贵族的男主人公的同时，也紧紧抓住了我们读者的心。简爱说过这样的一段话，给我的印象很深，也很能体现她的性格。她说：如果大家老是对残酷，不公道的人百依百顺，那么那些坏家伙就更要任性胡来了，他们会什么也不惧怕，这样也就永远也不会改好，反而越来越坏，当我们无缘无故挨了打，我们一定要狠狠地回击。我很赞成简的这种说法，因为自尊、自重是做人的最起码的要求。
我认为罗切斯特先生，正是她生活中的阳光。他们两人的交往是愉快的；他们两人的对话又是耐人寻味的。因为他们各自的性格特点都在那简短的对话中表现得淋漓尽致。简爱的丈夫，也就是此小说的男主人公罗切斯特先生是一个正直、善恶分明而又带有幽默感的人。他们两人真心相爱了。然而在他们的婚礼上，梅森先生揭露了罗切斯特先生是个有妻之夫的秘密后，简彻底失望了，她怀着万分悲痛的心情离开了他。然而他们最终又走到了一起。我很高兴他们最后是在一起的，当我读到简离开了罗切斯特先生时，我万分难过。
