一个叫以实玛利的沧桑老人向我们讲述了这样一个他亲身经历了的故事。为了实现自己那出海捕鲸的愿望，他与他那知心的朋友，“生番”王子魁魁格一起到了南塔开特港，上了一条叫“裴廓德号”的捕鲸船。未曾料到，这艘船的船长亚哈（《圣经》中的残暴国王，作者在这里引为比喻）只是为了复仇去捕杀那条叫莫比-迪克的白色巨鲸。经过一番艰苦寻找和殊死搏斗，亚哈最终还是失败了。和他一起葬送的，是“裴廓德号”和上面的全体船员，只留下以实玛利“惟有我一人逃脱，来报信给你”。

这样一个结局，也许会让无数人深沉叹息，会让很多人留下眼泪。在这之后，我们会更多地思考，这样一场悲剧的产生究竟归罪于谁？

答案就是贯穿整部书的一个行动——捕鲸。

捕鲸人不可谓不是英勇矫健，而白鲸当然也有自己生存的理由。而罪恶的捕鲸业迫使无数走投无路的“社会渣滓”被迫把自己的生命悬在波峰浪谷上，与彼此素不相识、无怨无仇的大鲸进行残酷的撕杀，以换取微薄的收入。如果说大鲸成了人类发展的牺牲品，那人类——那些被逼无奈的“社会渣滓”又何尝不是一样的呢？如果我们能进一步地深思的话，不难发现，其实这部书的作者也许是在向我们揭露和诉说19世纪美国社会的黑暗，富人对穷人的压迫。因为捕鲸业的真正收益人，只不过是船东老板这些上中层人物，以及全社会的资本积累。 作者赫尔曼·麦尔维尔自身就是一个有着非凡经历的人，当然在这样一部世界名著中，也能找到他的影子。以实玛利为了实现梦想而去出海捕鲸，自然作者本人也做过水手。作者曾在1841和1850年分别外出航行，为描写这个以他亲身经历为基础的故事提供了丰富素材，显得全小说真实得感人。全书也表达了作者对捕鲸业的热爱和对大海的向往。他为书中的那些低人一等、被人称作“屠夫”的捕鲸人进行了辩护，在二十四章，他把人对鲸的屠杀——捕鲸和人对人的屠杀——战争等同起来，讥讽了那些杀人不眨眼却还被捧为“贵族”、“大将”的殖民军将领。而相比之下，捕鲸人却有着更多高贵品质，他们勇于探索、勤劳能
